Ascension's clinic page, updated August 31, 2026, sorts blood pressure into five categories. Both numbers are read, and the higher band is the one that counts when they disagree. A reading of 125/85 lands in stage 1 for that reason. The 125 sits in the elevated systolic band, 120 to 129. Elevated also requires the diastolic number to be under 80. The 85 is not under 80. It sits in 80 to 89, and stage 1 is a systolic number from 130 to 139 or a diastolic number from 80 to 89. One of those two is enough.
| Category | Systolic (mm Hg) | Diastolic (mm Hg) |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Under 120 | and under 80 |
| Elevated | 120 to 129 | and under 80 |
| Stage 1 | 130 to 139 | or 80 to 89 |
| Stage 2 | 140 or higher | or 90 or higher |
| Severely elevated | Higher than 180 | and/or higher than 120 |
The page's own summary calls an ideal reading less than 130/80. The category rows still start stage 1 at 130 or at 80. Both lines are on the same page. The summary names a preferred range. The rows name the band a reading falls into.
125 fails normal, because normal needs a systolic number under 120 and a diastolic number under 80. It fails elevated, because elevated needs the diastolic number under 80. It meets stage 1 on the diastolic side. It misses stage 2, which starts at 140 or at 90. It misses the severely elevated row, which starts above 180 or above 120.
These categories are for repeated readings
The page ties the categories to repeated readings. Stress, caffeine, nicotine, exercise, pain, illness, or hurrying into the appointment can raise a single result. The page opens with a checkup form that shows 138/86, and says one reading leaves out the rest of the picture. It quotes Dr. Rina Verma. A single reading is not the state of a person's overall health. Repeated readings, the way the pressure was measured, symptoms, and the rest of the health picture decide whether the next step is treatment or monitoring.
A result higher than 180 and/or higher than 120 is the page's severely elevated row. Chest pain, shortness of breath, a severe headache, vision changes, confusion, weakness, a drooping face, or slurred speech means emergency care without waiting to measure again. Without those symptoms, the page says to sit for five minutes and measure again, then contact a doctor if the number is still that high.
This piece places 125/85 on that chart. It does not diagnose the person who got the reading, and it does not name a drug or a monitor.
