About this instrument

The AUDIT is WHO's standard screening tool for alcohol use. One 'drink' is roughly a can of beer, a glass of wine, or a shot of spirits.

The AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test) was developed by the World Health Organization and is the international gold standard for alcohol screening in primary care. Ten items cover consumption, control and consequences.

Items 1-8 score 0-4 on frequency; items 9-10 score 0/2/4. The total of 0-40 bands into 0-7 low risk, 8-15 hazardous, 16-19 harmful, and 20+ possible dependence.

One 'drink' is roughly 350ml of beer, 150ml of wine or 45ml of spirits. A high score does not mean you are 'an alcoholic' - it means the current pattern is accruing risk, and cutting back works best at the 8-15 stage.
