About this instrument
The NPI-16 is a 16-pair short form of the Narcissistic Personality Inventory. For each pair, pick the statement closer to the real you — not the nicer-sounding one.
The NPI-16 was published by Ames, Rose and Anderson (2006) — the 16 most discriminating pairs from the classic 40-item NPI, correlating about 0.90 with the full version, making it the standard quick form in research.
Each pair scores 0 or 1 (the keyed statement earns the point), totaling 0-16. Neither option is 'right' — the format deliberately balances social desirability across the two statements.
Narcissistic traits are a continuous dimension, not a moral label: moderate self-regard correlates with confidence, extraversion and leadership; only extreme levels relate to exploitativeness and fragile self-esteem. This measures the subclinical range.
