About this instrument
DASS-21 returns three separate subscale scores - depression, anxiety and stress - so you can see the shape of what is going on. Answer for the past week.
The DASS-21 (Depression Anxiety Stress Scales), published by the Lovibonds in 1995, is the short form of the DASS-42. Its key feature is three separate scores: depression (loss of interest and hope), anxiety (physiological arousal and panic), and stress (tension, irritability, over-reaction).
Each subscale sums seven items and is doubled to a 0-42 score, with its own bands from normal to extremely severe. Reading the three together answers 'is this mostly low mood or mostly tension?'.
Distress is often mixed - stressed people are not always depressed. The split scores help describe what is going on more precisely and work well for tracking change over time.
