About this instrument

The GAD-7 is the standard screening tool for generalized anxiety. Answer for the past two weeks; scoring stays on your device.

The GAD-7 (Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale), published by Spitzer, Kroenke, Williams and Löwe in 2006, is the international standard for anxiety screening. Its seven items cover tension, uncontrollable worry and difficulty relaxing.

Scoring sums the seven items for a total of 0-21: 0-4 minimal, 5-9 mild, 10-14 moderate, 15-21 severe. A score of 10 or more is the usual cutoff for further evaluation, and the scale picks up generalized, panic and social anxiety reasonably well.

Anxiety is among the most treatable common mental-health problems. A high score does not mean something is wrong with you - it signals that your recent anxiety load deserves attention, and exercise, breathing work, sleep and therapy all have solid evidence.
