About this instrument
The CBI separates personal burnout (life overall) from work-related burnout. If a part does not apply - for example you are not currently working - just look at the relevant subscale.
The Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (Kristensen et al., 2005) was developed by the Danish National Institute of Occupational Health. Unlike single-score burnout tools it separates personal burnout (exhaustion tied to life overall) from work-related burnout.
Each subscale is averaged to a 0-100 score: below 50 low, 50-74.9 moderate, 75-99.9 high, 100 severe. The original also has a client-related subscale for people-facing jobs, which is not included here.
Burnout is best understood as chronic resource overdraft, not weakness. If work burnout is much higher than personal burnout, the problem is likely in the job; if both are high, look at overall load.
