About this instrument

UCLA-3 is the three-item short form of the UCLA Loneliness Scale, used in major health surveys. Loneliness is a genuine health risk factor - worth looking at directly.

UCLA-3 is the three-item short form of the classic UCLA Loneliness Scale (Russell, 1996), validated by Hughes et al. (2004) and used routinely in major cohort studies. The three items ask about lacking companionship, feeling left out and feeling isolated.

Scoring sums the three items for 3-9; a total of 6 or more is the usual 'lonely' grouping in research.

Loneliness has solid epidemiological evidence as a health risk - comparable to some traditional risk factors for cardiovascular and cognitive outcomes. When the score is high, small regular contact beats 'meeting more people'.
